Valeting, Detailing and Paint Correction De-Mystified

snotrodthe69camaro

Valeting & detailing are terms which are thrown around quite loosely. The average Joe seems to see these as the be all and end until it is time to respray a panel or an entire vehicle.

Paint correction a massively powerful process, with the ability to show a vehicle off at its absolute best, and allows the valeting and detailing to work to their best effect.

By definition;

Valeting is to clean the bodywork and interior to a professional level

Detailing is to thoroughly clean the interior and exterior to a professional level and carry out minor repairs to improve the vehicles appearance.

Paint correction is the mechanical levelling of paint to reduce or remove imperfections within its surface.

Most cars roll out of the factory with a brand new, but unless your vehicle is of super premium value, less than perfect coat of paint. So those carefully crafted lines and that specially selected colour are not being displayed to their absolute maximum kerb appeal.

Paint correction when done well mechanically manipulates the paint removing any blemishes, swirl marks and light scratches. It also heats the surface layer of paint to the point of returning it to liquid form, only just. This allows the very top layer to become absolutely smooth and give a glass like finish. All expensive looking paint jobs have depth, and this is the key, keeping the colour behind a "coat of glass."

Risky Business

Working the paint to this degree is also a science as much as it is an art and of course holds great potential for error or failure, which can be a very expensive fix!

Definitely not to be attempted on a whim without expert guidance or in professional hands. Or that respray will come knocking on the door all too soon.

Some before, process and after examples of the paint correction process. A poorly executed offside respray where the top coat had reacted left a flat, discoloured side and overspray on other body panels. Started exploring on the largest area of the drivers door and worked my way out until the reacted lacquer was removed, leaving enough to rework the top coat into a deep luxurious blue that this high spec coupe should have been along.
